The weekend is here, and for many of us that will mean sitting in front of the TV watching our favourite film or show.

Sometimes there can be too much to choose from, but perhaps you might fancy sticking on something that was made a little closer to home?

Here's five movies and TV shows you can watch this weekend that were filmed right here in Ayrshire...

Outlaw King - Netflix

Star Trek actor Chris Pine was rumoured to be filming at Portencross for Netfix serial 'Outlaw King' about Robert The Bruce back in 2017.

Several medieval style tents were erected on the field area between Hunterston and Portencross for the filming, with the main entrance road to Portencross closed to traffic.

Whilst it was never confirmed if Pine was present in North Ayrshire, the film was a big hit and one small piece of the region played its part.

Shetland - BBC iPlayer

One of the BBC's biggest modern day hits now in its ninth season, Shetland has filmed in the Largs and Ayr areas for several years.

The show, which will head into season nine after a successful eighth series last year, focusses on crime and policing in rural Shetland.

Filming for series eight took place in April and May last year on the Old Largs Road, with a vintage Land Rover snapped as part of the set.

Previous series were also filmed across the region, with the Ayrshire landscape providing the perfect backdrop to the show.

Deadwater Fell - Netflix

Deadwater Fell first aired in January 2020 on Channel 4, after filming took place primarily in the small East Ayrshire village of Dunlop.

Scenes for the show, which starred David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, were filmed throughout the village, using locals as extras.

Filming also took place at Culzean Country Park, Irvine Beach and the Low Green Park in Irvine.

It was directed by Kilwinning native Lynsey Miller, who grew up in Whitehirst Park and went to school at Kilwinning Academy but moved to London 16 years ago.

The show has recently arrived on Netflix, and has been a big hit with viewers right across the UK.

Vigil - BBC iPlayer

One of the BBC's most popular shows of 2021, Vigil starring Martin Compston and Surranne Jones was partly filmed in Largs, Cumbrae and Hunterson the previous year.

The show was received with critical and public acclaim, with millions across the country hooked every week, and it was even given a BAFTA nomination.

One particular scene in the show shows actors sitting outside the Green Shutters Bistro as the Largs to Cumbrae ferry sails past.

The second series of the show aired late last year, with scenes shot in Glasgow and elsewhere around Scotland.

Outlander - Starz

This popular show is currently in its seventh series, and is a historical drama featuring Catriona Balfe and Sam Heughan.

The Outlander team filmed scenes for the show in the small harbourside village of Dunure near Ayr.

Filming also took place at various spots around Ayrshire including in Troon and along the River Ayr.

The latest instalment of the popular franchise will return to our screens this year, so now is the perfect time to catch up!
