Kilwinning's council by-election, following the death of Conservative councillor John Glover, is just six weeks away.

Voters in the Kilwinning ward will go to the polls on Thursday, May 9 to elect a new local councillor - and candidates have until 4pm on Friday, April 5, to submit their nomination papers.

Councillor Glover died on Saturday, February 24,

He had represented the Kilwinning ward since 2017, but had been unable to attend any council or committee meetings since May 2023 because of his ill health.

Prospective candidates are being warned that council offices will be closed on Friday, March 29, and Monday, April 1, due to the Easter holiday weekend.

Nomination packs can be downloaded from the council’s website or obtained by contacting the election office.

Anyone wishing to collect a nomination pack from the office in person is requested to call in advance on 01294 324729.

Voting will open for registered electors in the Kilwinning ward at 7am on Thursday, May 9, and polling places will remain open until 10pm.

The count, which is carried out electronically, will be held on Friday, May 10.

Those who would like to find out more about registering to vote – including obtaining a postal vote – can do so by contacting the Electoral Registration Office at www.ayrshire-vjb.gov.uk.

Residents have until midnight on Monday, April 22, to check they are registered to vote in the by-election.

The deadline to apply to vote by proxy or for postal applications is 5pm on Tuesday, April 23.
